For years, El Chile Group owner Carlos Rivero has dreamed of opening a Mexican Seafood concept, unique to Austin. After a recent excursion to South America to join his sister on a culinary tour of several countries, Rivero had a revelation – timing was perfect to make his seafood dream a reality. Already positioned on South Austin’s burgeoning restaurant row, Rivero decided the building at 1816 South 1st St (formerly El Chile #2) was the ideal space to house his upcoming project.
Alcomar features cuisine from co-executive chefs Alma Alcocer (of El Alma) and Jeff Martinez (of El Chile). “Alcomar” is a conflation of the two chefs’ last names, but also speaks to the coastal aspect of the menu with “mar,” the Spanish word for “sea.” Together, Alcocer and Martinez have devised a menu sampling regional flavors, ingredients, and dishes from each of Mexico’s coastlines.

“The omelet with mojo lobster ($16) features the same good poblano and goat cheese combo matched with dainty spring asparagus, napped with a voluptuous mantle of toothsome lobster in a pale pink mojo sauce. If there's a better omelet in town right now, I'd be hard-pressed to name it.” - Virginia B. Wood, The Austin Chronicle
“The ocean-driven menu shimmers with a Peruvian ceviche awash in the fruity bite of amarillo pepper and ginger, the waves of pink tuna dotted with rafts of corn nuts and glowing wedges of sweet potato ($12).” - Matthew Odam, Austin-American Statesman
“This bright, seaside-inspired spot in the former El Chile space on South First Street serves up coastal Latin fare, providing a welcome break from our beloved but ubiquitous Tex-Mex. Featuring seafood-centric dishes from Mexico to Chile, chefs Alma Alcocer-Thomas and Jeff Martinez’s menu is as satisfying as it is refreshing.” - Joléne M. Bouchon, Austin Monthly
“The absolute star of the evening, though, was our grilled red snapper in a classic green pumpkin seed mole over house-made chochoyotes (masa “dumplings”). While you wait, have one of a half dozen margaritas along with the gratis escabeche of lightly pickled vegetables—the best version we’ve had in town.” - Pat Sharpe, Texas Monthly
